Tajikistan's Seven Lakes: What to Expect
The Haft Kul (Seven Lakes) of Tajikistan are a chain of glacial lakes nestled in the Fann Mountains, a spur of the Pamir-Alay range. Each lake has its own colour — from turquoise to deep emerald — reflecting the mineral content of the glacial meltwater. The drive from Samarkand takes roughly two hours, crossing the Uzbek-Tajik border near Penjikent, making this the most accessible Pamir-region experience from Central Asia's main tourist hub.
En route you visit Penjikent, an ancient Sogdian city that flourished in the 5th-8th centuries before Arab conquest. The ruins — mud-brick temples, painted palaces, and Zoroastrian shrines — sit atop a desert plateau overlooking the modern town. Nearby, Sarazm is a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back 5,500 years, one of the earliest known urban settlements in Central Asia.
The Full Day Route from Samarkand
Your guide meets you in Samarkand at 07:00 for an early departure. After border formalities (typically 20-40 minutes), you reach Penjikent by mid-morning for a guided walk through the Sogdian ruins and the local museum housing original frescoes. From Penjikent a scenic mountain road winds 35 km into the Fann Mountains. The first lake, Nefin, appears around noon; you then walk the valley trail past Soya, Gushor, Marguzor, Khurdak, Mirgon, and finally Hazorchashma — the largest and most dramatic, ringed by 3,000-metre peaks.
A packed lunch is eaten lakeside. In the afternoon you retrace the route, with a stop at Sarazm on the way back, before recrossing the border and arriving in Samarkand by early evening.
