Tour program of Samarkand city tour
Go back in time and let yourself be amazed by the Heart of Samarkand - Registan and the legendary city Afrosiab. Magical and full of history, the capital of the one of greatest conquerors of the world Amir Timur. The double domes of Shahi-Zinda Necropolis are majestically located to attract the city’s visitors. This tour includes air conditioned sedan car, English speaking guide. This tour starts from anywhere in Samarkand and ends at Bibkhanum Mosques near Siab Bazar.
The Monuments You'll Visit
Registan Square — Three madrasahs faced in turquoise and gold tile, standing together since the 15th century. Scholars from across the Islamic world came here to study astronomy, mathematics and theology. Walking across the square as morning light hits the mosaics is one of the great travel experiences of Central Asia.
Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum — The tomb of Amir Timur (Tamerlane), the 14th-century conqueror whose empire stretched from Turkey to India. The ribbed azure dome and the interior of inlaid marble and gold-painted plasterwork make it one of the most beautiful buildings in the Islamic world.
Bibi-Khanym Mosque — Built by Timur to be the largest mosque in the world after his Indian campaign (1399–1404). It was so ambitious that the construction rushed and the dome collapsed decades later — but what remains is still breathtaking in scale. The mosque overlooks the Siab Bazaar, Samarkand's ancient covered market still selling local spices, dried fruits and warm non bread.
Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis — A street of 11th–15th century tombs, each clad in different tilework. This is considered one of the finest examples of medieval Islamic architecture on earth — and because it's a working place of pilgrimage, it has an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Samarkand.
Afrosiab (optional) — The site of ancient Samarkand, inhabited for 2,700 years before Genghis Khan destroyed it in 1220. The small museum contains the extraordinary 7th-century Ambassadors' Fresco — a coloured painting showing diplomatic delegations from China, Korea, India and the Byzantine Empire visiting the Sogdian king.
Best Time to Visit Samarkand
April–May and September–October are peak season — temperatures 18–28°C, clear skies, and the monuments look their best in warm light. Summer (July–August) is hot but manageable with early starts. The Registan is lit up on summer evenings for a spectacular sound-and-light show.
