Nuratau homestay Tour Description
This two days trip to Nuratau Mountains offers you a chance to experience rural homestay with the mountain farmer family in the remote village of Nuratau Mountains and get to know about their daily life, traditions and customs. You will also explore the mountains, it’s flora and fauna and some local sites during short walks around the village. On the way to Bukhara we stop in an ancient city of Nurata famous for Alexander the Greats fortress ruins, local Suzani workshop and Chashma Mosque.
What Makes This Tour Unique
The Nuratau Mountains sit at the crossroads of three ancient trade routes, yet very few travellers ever reach them. This 2-day homestay is one of the only ways to experience authentic rural Uzbek life — eating home-cooked dimlama stew around a family table, waking to the sound of livestock, and walking trails where shepherds have passed for centuries. There are no tourist restaurants here, no souvenir shops — just mountain hospitality at its most genuine.
Day-by-Day Highlights
Day 1 — Samarkand to Nuratau: Departing Samarkand after breakfast, you drive through the rolling steppe before the road climbs into walnut and juniper forests. On the way, you stop at Nurata city to explore the 2nd-century Alexander the Great fortress ruins (locally called "Nur"), the sacred Chashma spring mosque, and a traditional suzani embroidery workshop where local women hand-stitch the silk textiles Uzbekistan is famous for. You arrive at the homestay village in the early afternoon — time for a walk to nearby petroglyphs carved by nomads up to 4,000 years ago before a home-cooked dinner with your host family.
Day 2 — Mountain morning and onward: Rise early for a short mountain hike as mist sits in the valleys below. Breakfast with the family, then depart toward Bukhara (or return to Samarkand) — your choice of drop-off is included in the price.
Best Time to Visit
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal — wildflowers carpet the hillsides in spring, and the harvest season brings apricots, walnuts and pomegranates in autumn. Summer is warm but manageable at altitude. Winter visits are possible for those who want dramatic snow-dusted mountains and complete solitude.
Who Is This Tour For?
This tour suits curious travellers who want more than city sightseeing. No technical hiking fitness is required — the walks are gentle. It's particularly popular with solo travellers, couples and small groups who want an off-the-beaten-path experience between Samarkand and Bukhara rather than the direct highway transfer.
