Samarkand sits just 100 km from the Tajikistan border, making it the perfect base for a cross-border adventure into one of Central Asia's most dramatic mountain landscapes. Our Tajikistan tours take you across the Uzbekistan-Tajikistan border into the Fann Mountains (Fan Mountains), home to the famous Seven Lakes (Haft Kul) — a series of turquoise glacier-fed mountain lakes, each a different shade of emerald, jade, or sapphire.
The journey from Samarkand crosses the border at Jartepa and winds through spectacular mountain scenery into Penjikent before climbing into the Fan Mountains. At 2,200–2,400 m elevation, the lakes offer a cool escape from the desert heat of the Uzbekistan plains — and a very different landscape from the Silk Road cities. Experienced English-speaking guides handle all border logistics, visas, and transport. A day trip to the Seven Lakes takes approximately 10–11 hours including driving time.
Jahongir Travel has been operating cross-border tours to Tajikistan since 2015. The Seven Lakes route is one of our most popular summer itineraries, particularly with travellers who want to add a dramatic mountain day to their Silk Road itinerary without extending their overall trip. We handle Tajikistan e-visa and GBAO permit guidance, and our drivers know the border crossing procedures at Jartepa intimately.
The best time to visit the Seven Lakes is May through October. The access road may be snowed in from November through April. Summer temperatures at the lakes are comfortable (15–22°C) even when Samarkand is at 38°C. For the most dramatic views, come in September when the autumn light turns the surrounding peaks golden.
