Ancient Desert Fortresses · Toprak Qala & Ayaz Qala
A full-day expedition into the Kyzylkum Desert to visit the haunting mud-brick ruins of Khorezm civilisation — the kingdom that flourished here from the 1st to 8th centuries AD, long before Islam reached Central Asia.
You'll visit four kala (fortresses): the towering Toprak Qala with its palace ruins, Ayaz Qala on a desert ridge, the smaller Kyzyl Qala and Gyaur Qala.
These are some of the largest pre-Islamic ruins in Central Asia. The scale is hard to believe until you stand inside walls that have weathered 1,500 desert summers and still tower above you.
Less restored, less crowded, and infinitely more atmospheric than the Silk Road monuments most travellers see — this is what ancient Khorezm actually looked like.
