Good to know

Practical tips

  • Times are approximate and may vary with road conditions, weather and the season.
  • Aydarkul Lake and the yurt camp are separate places: you have lunch by the lake, then drive on to the camp.
  • Bring warm layers — desert nights get cold, even after hot days. Heating in the yurt is not guaranteed; ask us in advance if you would like a heater.
  • Toilets and showers are shared camp facilities in a separate building, not inside the yurts.
  • Electricity at the camp is limited in the evening — bring a power bank and a small torch.
  • In warm months, pack swimwear if you would like to swim in the lake (conditions permitting).

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Bukhara → Samarkand tour cost?
It is the same per-person rate as all our yurt camp routes: $286 for 1 traveler, $176 per person for 2, and $145 per person for 3 (private).
Does this tour end in Samarkand?
Yes — it drops you at your Samarkand hotel on Day 2, usually between about 14:00 and 16:00, so it works as your transfer from Bukhara to Samarkand as well as a desert experience.
Do I pay to request availability?
No. Asking is free: send the availability form or message us on WhatsApp with your dates. Our team checks availability with the driver and the camp and replies within 24 hours with the final price. Once you confirm, we send you the payment details — a 30% deposit, usually paid through a secure payment link, confirms the tour, or you can pay in full. The rest is paid online before the trip.
Can we travel with children?
Yes. This is a private tour, with a car and driver just for your party. Children aged 3–12 pay a child rate: half the price of one more adult. Children under 3 travel free. Everyone, babies included, takes a seat in the car, so the prices shown cover up to 3 travellers in total; for a larger party we quote the price ourselves. Our reply confirms your exact total, children included, before anything is paid, and a 30% deposit then confirms the tour.
What are the yurts like?
Traditional felt yurts with beds and bedding, never shared with travellers outside your party. Toilets and showers are shared camp facilities in a separate building, not inside the yurt. Desert nights get cold even after warm days, so bring warm layers — heating is not guaranteed, though a heater may be available if you ask in advance.
Is there a guide?
This is a transport-only tour: your driver handles logistics and the camp hosts look after meals and activities. A licensed city guide can be arranged separately on request.
When is the best time to go?
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) are most comfortable. Summer days are hot but nights are clear; winter is cold but possible with warm clothing.
Which yurt camp in Uzbekistan is best?
For most travellers on the Samarkand–Bukhara route, the desert camps near Aydarkul Lake in the Kyzylkum Desert are the practical choice: a lakeside lunch stop, a short camel ride and dark skies fit into one overnight trip, and the area lies between the two cities. The desert route is a longer drive than the direct highway, but on a one-way route the night replaces the transfer you would make anyway. The desert camps near Bukhara are simpler and have no lake; the Ayaz-Kala camps near Khiva are far to the west and only make sense on a Khiva itinerary.
Where is the Aydarkul yurt camp and how do I get there?
The yurt camp is in the Kyzylkum Desert near the village of Yangigazgan. Aydarkul Lake, where you stop for lunch, is a separate place: after the lake you continue to the camp by car. This tour includes the private transport — pickup at your hotel in Samarkand or Bukhara, the desert drive with stops, the night at the camp, and drop-off at your hotel in the other city (or back in Samarkand on the round trip) the next afternoon.
What is a night at the yurt camp actually like?
After lunch at Aydarkul Lake you drive on to the camp, check in and settle into a felt yurt with beds and bedding. Later in the afternoon there is a short camel ride of about 10 minutes. Dinner is served at the camp — traditional local food prepared by the hosts, with a menu that varies. After dinner the campfire is lit when conditions allow, often with traditional music, and on clear nights the stars are remarkably bright. You spend the night in your yurt, and breakfast is served at the camp the next morning before the drive on.
Is one night in a desert yurt camp worth it?
For most people, yes: guests often call the evening in the desert one of the highlights of their trip. Plan for a full travel day — the desert route takes longer than the direct highway between Samarkand and Bukhara. It is a simple stay with shared facilities, not a luxury one; if you need hotel comfort or are travelling with very young children, think carefully before booking.
Do the yurts have electricity?
The camp has limited evening electricity (solar / generator) for lighting. Charging points can be limited, so bring a power bank for phones and cameras.
Are the toilets and showers modern?
The camp has clean, modern shared toilets and showers in a separate building — they are not inside the yurts. It is a comfortable step up from a basic desert camp, but the facilities are shared with other guests.
Will we have a private yurt?
Yes. On our private tours your party never shares its sleeping yurt with other travellers. For two travellers, one private yurt is included in the price. Larger parties are accommodated according to yurt capacity, which we confirm with your quote — we do not promise that every party fits in one yurt. Separate yurts for each couple are not automatically included; if you would like them, ask us before booking (extra charges may apply). The rest of the camp — dining area, campfire, toilets and showers — is shared with other guests.
Is the camel ride included?
Yes. A short camel ride of approximately 10 minutes is included. The ride is optional, and the timing depends on the season and camp arrangements. Longer rides may be available by advance request for an additional charge.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes, families are welcome. Children enjoy the camels and the campfire, the camel ride is optional, and bedding is provided. Bring warm layers for little ones, as desert nights get cold.
How cold is it at night?
Desert nights can be cold, even after hot summer days, and in spring and autumn temperatures drop sharply after sunset. The felt walls and bedding help, but bring warm layers. Heating in the yurt is not guaranteed; a heater may be available on request, so ask us in advance.
Can vegetarian meals be arranged?
Usually, yes. Tell us about vegetarian or other dietary requirements when you book, and we confirm them with the camp in advance.
Can I swim in Aydarkul Lake?
Often, in the warm months (roughly May to September), when the weather and local conditions allow — swimming is never guaranteed. Bring swimwear if you would like to try; in cooler months the lake is better for photos and a walk along the shore.
Is this tour available in winter?
Yes, on request. Winter is cold but quiet and atmospheric. Bring proper warm clothing, and ask us about a heater for the yurt in advance — it is not guaranteed.
