Route Overview: Bukhara to Nuratau Mountains
This 3-day journey links Bukhara and the Nuratau highlands. The route passes the 11th-century Rabati Malik caravanserai ruins and the ceramics village of Gijduvan, where master craftsmen shape blue-glazed pottery on hand-turned wheels — a craft recognised by UNESCO. The drive continues to Nurata city, home to the sacred Chul-Chashma spring, where white ducks glide across holy water believed to heal illness. Adjacent stands the Nur citadel, a fort attributed to Alexander the Great commanding the northern approach to the Zarafshan valley.
Nights are spent in authentic family homestays in stone-built homes surrounded by walnut, mulberry, and apricot orchards. These were the first rural tourism project in Uzbekistan, launched in cooperation with the UNDP. Meals are home-cooked: fresh non bread, suzma, mulberry jam, and slow-stewed lamb.
Hiking and Activities
Day two brings a guided hike between villages across ridgelines where the Kyzylkum steppe stretches to the horizon in one direction and the snow-capped Turkestan peaks rise in the other. Local guides point out medicinal herbs and ancient irrigation channels still in use. Optional activities include horse riding along mountain paths, fishing in cold mountain streams, and bread baking in a tandoor with your host family.
