Eight days and seven nights — the most efficient way to see all four of Uzbekistan's Silk Road cities without rushing the highlights.
From Tashkent to Samarkand and Shahrisabz, on to Bukhara and finally the walled city of Khiva, with a local guide, comfortable hotels and the return flight arranged for you.
A morning in the capital, then the fast train to Samarkand and two days among its monuments.
Over the pass to Timur's birthplace, then two days in the old city of Bukhara.
The long desert drive to the walled city of Khiva, and a full day inside Ichan-Kala.
The flight back to Tashkent for your onward departure.
You are met at Tashkent airport and, after settling in, take a city tour: the religious heart at Hasti-Imam Square — the Barak-Khan madrasah and the Kaffal Shashi mausoleum — and the old town.
An early drive to Samarkand, then after lunch the first of the great sights: the Registan square, the Bibi-Khanum mosque and the Gur-e-Amir, the mausoleum of Timur.
The observatory of Ulugbek, the tomb of the prophet Daniel (Khoja Daniyor), the Afrasiab museum on the site of ancient Samarkand, the Bibi-Khanum bazaar and the tiled avenue of tombs at Shah-i-Zinda.
South over the Tahtakaracha pass to Shahrisabz, Timur's birthplace: the Ak-Saray palace ruins, the Kok-Gumbaz mosque and the Hazrati Imam ensemble. Then on across the steppe to Bukhara.
A full day in Bukhara: the Ark fortress, the Bolo Hauz mosque, the Samanid and Chashma-Ayub mausoleums, the Kalyan minaret and mosque, and Lyabi-Hauz with the Nadir Divan-Begi madrasah — plus the Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa summer palace.
A long drive (about 480 km, 6–8 hours) across the desert, following the Amu Darya, to the ancient Khorezm capital of Khiva. The rest of the day is free.
A full tour of Ichan-Kala, the walled inner city and open-air museum: the Muhammad Amin-Khan madrasah and its Kalta Minor minaret, the Kunya-Ark, the Juma mosque with its forest of carved pillars and the Pahlavan Mahmud mausoleum. Then the flight to Tashkent.
Free time in Tashkent, then a transfer to the airport for your onward flight. End of the tour.
