Tour Description
Amankutan - one of the most picturesque corners of Uzbekistan. It is located in the western spur of the Zarafshan and other ranges in the basin. Amankutan, 40 km south-west of Samarkand. Area Amankutanskoy forest garden - 2158 hectares. Aman-Kutan Cave is located on the northern slope of Zeravshan mountains, among the ancient lime stones, south of Samarkand. Its length is 80 m. It consists of several halls, which cover the bottom of the lake flow underground. In the cave there were beautiful sinter formations - stalactites and stalagmites.
Hiking in Amankutan: Samarkand's Mountain Escape
Only 40 km from the Registan yet completely unknown to most visitors, the Amankutan Gorge is Samarkand's best-kept outdoor secret. The gorge cuts deep into the western Zarafshan range, its limestone walls draped in juniper forest and wild walnut trees. This is where Samarkandis come to escape the city — for picnics, fresh air and the sound of water after the dry steppe heat. For travellers, it offers something rare on the Uzbekistan tourist trail: a half-day in genuine mountain nature with no ticket booths, no tour buses, and no crowds.
The Cave: Aman-Kutan Grotto
The centrepiece of the tour is Aman-Kutan Cave, a natural limestone cave on the northern slope of the gorge. At 80 metres deep, it contains three main chambers connected by passages, with an underground stream running through the lowest level. Ancient stalactites and stalagmites have been forming here for millions of years. Archaeological finds inside date human use of the cave to the Neolithic period — this is one of the oldest human shelter sites in Central Asia. Access requires a short but moderately steep climb; your mountain guide will lead you safely through.
The Hike
The main trail follows the gorge floor through mixed forest, crossing the stream on stone footbridges. The terrain is not technical — good walking shoes are sufficient. Total hiking distance is approximately 5–7 km with 200–300m elevation gain. The route passes through apple and walnut orchards at lower elevation before entering the denser mountain forest. Wildlife in the gorge includes golden eagles, porcupines and — rarely — mountain goats on the higher ridges.
Best Time to Hike
April–June is magical — the gorge is full of wildflowers and the stream runs fast with snowmelt. September–October brings autumn colour to the walnut and maple trees. Summer is comfortable at altitude even when Samarkand is hot. The trail is accessible year-round but can be slippery in winter.
